Amazon Product Pricing Report

Based on analysis of Jungle Scout data from 150 of the best-selling products on Amazon, this first-of-its-kind report explores recent pricing trends and the ways popular consumer product prices shift over time. We’ll reveal key factors that drive those changes — and by how much — and whether sales events like Amazon Prime Day really offer the best deals.

Key Insights

Prices of products on Amazon have been less volatile — and in general, lower, in 2023 than in 2022 and 2021, when the U.S. inflation rate was at record highs.

It seems Amazon Prime Days really are the best time to shop. On average, prices are consistently at their lowest of the year during big sales events.

Consumers buying popular Health & Household products are more likely to be paying more for them this year, while Appliance shopping is at a discount.

Product Pricing Trends in 2023

On average, 2023 has seen less volatility in average product price changes from month to month — higher or lower — than in recent years. Among more than 100 of the best-selling products on Amazon, just over half (53%) increased in price between September of 2022 and August 2023. Looking at those same products year-to-date, that percentage dips slightly to 51%. However, pricing trends aren’t uniform across Amazon’s different product categories, and at the product level, they can be difficult to identify.

Tracking product price changes over time

Prices for this sample selection of popular consumer products have all changed in different ways over the past year. They don’t all follow the same trends, but viewed individually — and with the context of consumer demand — clear stories emerge.

For example: The price of Redtwo Clay Beads Bracelet Making Kit — among the top 10 best-selling products in Amazon’s Arts, Crafts & Sewing category — at its highest in December 2022, following the Nov. 1, 2022, announcement of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The price of Amazon’s popular Neoprene Dumbbell — a Sports & Outdoor category best-seller — peaked in January and February, as throngs of consumers started fitness routines for the new year.
